A City of Art and History, Vannes is located at the gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan, in southern Brittany, on the Marle estuary. Already fortified by the Romans, the city developed within its ramparts in the medieval period, then outside them in the 17th century, with the construction of numerous townhouses.
Home to the Dukes of Brittany, Vannes boasts a magnificent historic center, with 171 half-timbered houses! You can visit Vannes on a guided tour, aboard a miniature train, or on your own.
You will begin by admiring the medieval ramparts, among the best preserved in Brittany, which offer a charming walk along the Garenne, a path dotted with gardens and pretty wash houses.
After exploring the port, with its tree-lined quays including the Quai de la Rabine, take the 17th-century Porte Saint-Vincent, built to connect the port and the historic quarter: you enter the old town via a street lined with old buildings, townhouses and half-timbered houses.
Walk to Place des Lices, where the 1912 Halles (covered market) awaits. Dedicated to food products, it is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, and all day Saturday.
